Origin made clear
What is a lab-grown diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is crystallised carbon produced in a controlled facility rather than formed in the Earth. It is a diamond, not an imitation such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can look alike without specialist testing because they share essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties. Their growth environments leave features that trained laboratories can identify using advanced instruments.
Clear origin wording matters. Every option on this page's catalogue path is identified as laboratory-grown so it is not confused with a mined diamond.
Two principal methods
How are lab-grown diamonds made?
High pressure, high temperature
A carbon source grows around a diamond seed under conditions designed to reproduce high pressure and high temperature. HPHT can describe the growth method and, separately, a treatment applied after growth, so read the report wording carefully.
Chemical vapour deposition
Carbon-containing gas deposits carbon onto a diamond seed in a low-pressure chamber. Some CVD diamonds receive post-growth treatment; the report comments provide relevant disclosure when assessed.
Growth method does not tell you whether one finished diamond is more attractive than another. Cut pattern, colour, clarity, proportions and the individual appearance remain the useful buying evidence.

How is lab-grown diamond quality assessed?
| Factor | What it describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Facet design, proportions and finish that influence light performance. | Video, proportions, polish, symmetry and eligible cut grade. |
| Colour | The depth of colour within the normal D-to-Z range. | Face-up appearance, shape, size and intended setting colour. |
| Clarity | The relative absence of inclusions and blemishes. | Type, size, position and visibility of characteristics. |
| Carat | Weight, not a direct measurement of visible size. | Exact weight together with millimetre dimensions. |
| Report | Independent identification and assessed specifications. | Origin wording, report number, comments and laboratory database. |
Use live comparisons
How much do lab-grown diamonds cost in the UK?
There is no single useful lab-grown diamond price. Exact weight, shape, cut, colour, clarity, dimensions, fluorescence, report details and current availability all affect the amount. Published fixed ranges quickly become stale and can compare unlike stones.
Use the live catalogue to place diamonds with similar specifications side by side. A lower price is only better value when the diamond still meets your priorities for appearance, documentation and dimensions.
Retail price and future resale value are different questions. Choose for the appearance, specifications and budget that suit you, not on an expectation of appreciation.
A sensible order of decisions
How to choose a lab-grown diamond
- Set your total budget.Allow separately for the setting because Gracefully currently sells loose diamonds.
- Choose a shape.Decide on outline and, for fancy shapes, your preferred length-to-width ratio.
- Prioritise cut and appearance.Look for balanced brightness, contrast and movement before chasing maximum grades.
- Balance colour and clarity.Seek a result you enjoy at realistic viewing size, not simply the highest letters.
- Check weight and measurements.Compare visible spread because equal-carat diamonds can face up differently.
- Verify the report.Match the report number, origin description, measurements and comments to the listing.
Independent documentation
What should the grading report show?
A report should clearly identify laboratory-grown origin and document the assessed characteristics. IGI laboratory-grown reports may include shape, measurements, the 4Cs, proportions, growth process and treatment comments. Since October 2025, GIA's qualifying D-to-Z laboratory-grown service uses an overall Premium or Standard assessment rather than the older natural-diamond nomenclature.
Read the actual report and its date; do not assume every laboratory or historical report uses the same format. A grading report describes the stone. It is not a monetary valuation, warranty or guarantee of beauty.

Common questions
Lab-grown diamond FAQs
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
They are diamonds with essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, but they are produced in a controlled facility rather than mined.
Can you tell a lab-grown diamond by looking at it?
Not reliably with the unaided eye. Professional laboratories use advanced equipment to identify growth origin.
Are lab-grown diamonds the same as cubic zirconia?
No. Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulant with different composition and properties. A laboratory-grown diamond is crystallised carbon.
Do lab-grown diamonds have grading reports?
Many do. Check that the report identifies laboratory-grown origin, matches the listing and can be verified with the issuing laboratory.
Which is better, HPHT or CVD?
Neither growth method automatically produces the better finished stone. Compare the individual diamond's appearance, specifications and report comments.
Are lab-grown diamonds automatically sustainable?
No broad environmental claim should be assumed from origin alone. Meaningful comparison requires specific, substantiated information about energy, production and the relevant supply chain.
